Welcome To The Appellate
Welcome to our first edition of The Appellate. Founded Thursday April 18 2024 by Kenneth Jones and our slogan is “Darkness Can Not Contain Light” for darkness truly can not contain light without losing itself. In today’s world, honesty is often considered a virtue that is in short supply. Lying, cheating, and deceit seem to be more common than ever before. However, telling the truth is not always easy.

Many of us struggle with the temptation to lie, especially in situations where the truth may be uncomfortable, embarrassing or even cost us our job or relationship. Being truthful can have various psychological and social benefits. On the other hand, telling the truth can be challenging because it may require us to face potential negative consequences. Studies have shown that people tend to anticipate more severe consequences for telling the truth than for lying, even when the truth would be more favorable.

The scales of justice are about fairness in court cases. There are two sides to every story, and each side of a case or a story must be heard. Each side gets the chance to present “evidence”, or the details about the case. Lady Justice carefully “weighs” the claims of each side, using the scales of justice handout. The balance (scales) represent weighing facts and evidence to decide a verdict. It also shows her duty to restore balance to society.
Lady Justice is blindfolded in order to keep her from developing biases during a decision making process. It symbolizes the importance of resisting bias, and trying to focus solely on the individuals involved in a situation. While human beings can never fully be without bias, Lady Justice serves as a reminder of the role bias can play in shaping justice, both negatively and positively. The scales of Lady Justice represent the pursuit of equitable justice. As per Eleanor Roosevelt, justice is meant to serve all people, not just one person. As such, the scales show the importance of a balanced decision that serves all involved in a question of justice.

The scroll on Lady Justice represents the preservation of the law and its presence in all justice decision-making settings. To make a just decision is to defend the law, and to uphold it. Balancing scales symbolize law and justice. The Lady Justice holds them as evidence of the importance of justice serving all parties involved, not solely one person in a given situation. Lady Justice’s sword shows authority, including the power to punish injustice. It also implies being able to cut through obstacles to get to the facts of a case.

Honesty is our policy! Honesty is a critical component of healthy relationships. We hope to build trust with our audience and followers.
In addition, honesty is also important in our workplace. Our employers are honest and trustworthy are valued and respected by their colleagues and supervisors. This gives them more opportunities for growth and advancement in their careers.

In the complex and deeply entrenched conflict of the Middle East, the pursuit of justice is undeniably intertwined with the quest for peace. The resolution of historical grievances, protection of human rights, and fair treatment of all parties are fundamental components of achieving lasting peace in the region. Without a commitment to justice, peace will remain elusive, and the cycle of violence and instability may persist. Thus, addressing the multifaceted issues with an unwavering dedication to justice is paramount for building a foundation of peace in the Middle East.

The Atomic Bomb and the Nuclear Age
The detonation of the first atomic bomb in July 1945 started the Atomic Age, an era in which the fear of nuclear attack and the promise of nuclear power pervaded American culture. Less than a month later, two atomic bombs were dropped on Japan, killing at least 129,000 Japanese, and precipitating the end of World War II in the Pacific.
Middle East on the brink of a regional conflict
The conflict has its origins in the rise of Zionism in Europe and the arrival of Jewish settlers to Ottoman Palestine in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The local Arab population opposed Zionism, primarily out of fear of territorial displacement and dispossession.
Israel’s Occupation: 50 Years of Dispossession
For the last 50 years, Israel has been forcing thousands of Palestinians off their land, occupying and illegally using it to create settlements that exclusively house Jewish Israeli settlers. For half a century, Israel’s occupation of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip has resulted in systematic human rights violations against Palestinians living there.
Israeli-Palestinian Conflict Background
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict dates back to the end of the nineteenth century. In 1947, the United Nations adopted Resolution 181, known as the Partition Plan, which sought to divide the British Mandate of Palestine into Arab and Jewish states. On May 14, 1948, the State of Israel was created, sparking the first Arab-Israeli War. he issue is not just about Israel taking Palestinian land and resources illegally. Governments around the world are letting goods produced in these settlements into their markets, and are allowing companies in their countries to operate in settlements. All of this helps the illegal settlements profit and thrive.
The 1993 Oslo I Accords
The 1993 Oslo I Accords mediated the conflict, setting up a framework for the Palestinians to govern themselves in the West Bank and Gaza, and enabled mutual recognition between the newly established Palestinian Authority and Israel’s government.
Palestinians launched the second intifada, which would last until 2005. In response, the Israeli government approved the construction of a barrier wall around the West Bank in 2002, despite opposition from the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court.
Benjamin ‘Bibi’ Netanyahu and his Likud party
The most far-right and religious government in
Israel’s history, led by Benjamin ‘Bibi’ Netanyahu and his Likud party
and comprising two ultra-Orthodox parties and three far-right parties,
was inaugurated in late December 2022. The coalition government prioritized the expansion and development of Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, endorsed discrimination against LGBTQ+ people on religious grounds, and voted to limit judicial oversight of the government in May 2023 after a delay due to nationwide protests in March.
Buildup And Development From
On May 17, 2021- October 7, 2023
In early May 2021, after a court ruled in favor of the eviction of several Palestinian families from East Jerusalem properties, protests erupted, with Israeli police employing force against demonstrators. After several consecutive days of violence, Hamas, the militant group which governs Gaza, and other Palestinian militant groups launched hundreds of rockets into Israeli territory. Israel responded with artillery bombardments and airstrikes, killing more than twenty Palestinians and hitting both military and non-military infrastructure, including residential buildings, media headquarters, and refugee and healthcare facilities. After eleven days, Israel and Hamas agreed to a cease-fire, with both sides claiming victory. The fighting killed more than 250 Palestinians and at least 13 Israelis, wounded nearly 2,000 others, and displaced 72,000 Palestinian

Palestinian Rockets in May Killed Civilians in Israel, Gaza. Israeli authorities reported that Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups launched more than 4,360 unguided rockets and mortars toward Israeli population centers between May 10 and 21.
The Israeli Air Force carried out another large-scale series of raids against Hamas’ tunnel network on 17 May, bombing over 15 kilometers of underground passages, with 54 Israeli jets dropping 110 bombs. The homes of nine Hamas commanders and a home used by Hamas’ military intelligence branch were also bombed.

On the afternoon of 10 May, Hamas gave Israel an ultimatum to withdraw its security forces from both the Temple Mount complex and Sheikh Jarrah by 6 p.m. When the ultimatum expired without a response, both Hamas and PIJ launched rockets from the Gaza Strip into Israel; some of these rockets hit Israeli residences and a school. Israel then began a campaign of airstrikes against Gaza; by 16 May, some 950 targets had been attacked, demolishing completely or partially 18 buildings, including four high-rise towers, 40 schools and four hospitals, while also striking the al-Shati refugee camp. Additionally, at least 19 medical facilities were damaged or destroyed by the Israeli bombardment.[57] By 17 May, the United Nations estimated that Israeli airstrikes had destroyed 94 buildings in Gaza, comprising 461 housing and commercial units, including the al-Jalaa Highrise; housing offices of the Associated Press, the Al Jazeera Media Network, and other news outlets; and 60 condominiums.
From October 7, 2024 – Til Now!
October 7 reveals widespread human rights abuses by Hamas fighters and others who followed them through the fence from the Gaza Strip and draws up a comprehensive list of those killed. But the investigation by the I-Unit, which examined hours of footage from CCTV, dashcams, personal phones and headcams of killed Hamas fighters, has also found that many of the stories that came out in the days following the attack were false. These include claims of atrocities such as the mass killing and beheading of babies as well as allegations of widespread and systematic rape – stories that were used repeatedly by politicians in Israel and the West to justify the ferocity of the subsequent bombardment of the Gaza Strip, which has so far killed nearly 32,000 people.
Are they are gunmen or hostages?’
After a thorough analysis of all available data, the I-Unit concluded that claims by the Israeli army that it found eight burned babies at a house in Kibbutz Be’eri were untrue. The analysis found that there were no babies in the house, and the 12 people inside were almost certainly killed by Israeli forces when they stormed the building. This was one of a number of incidents where the police and army appear to have killed Israeli citizens. The I-Unit identified 19 such victims, but the true figure is likely to be higher. It also identified 27 captives who died between their homes and the Gaza fence in circumstances that have not been explained. Gun camera footage from Israeli Apache helicopters shows numerous strikes on vehicles and individuals making their way back to Gaza. “My concern with this footage is we cannot tell whether they are Hamas gunmen or …. hostages. And I don’t believe the helicopter pilot, or the machine gun operator would be able to tell either,” said Chris Cobb-Smith, a British army veteran and human rights researcher.

Israel would not be able to conduct this war without the US, which over time has provided Israel with about 80 percent of the country’s weapons imports. Israel is using them as part of its large-scale military operation that has so far killed over 34,000 Palestinians and destroyed hospitals and civilian infrastructure.
